- Groundhogs, or woodchucks, are found in the Northeastern U.S. and most forested parts of Canada.
- Woodchucks live alone in burrows with several rooms. They feed during the day on grass, leaves, and flowers.
- When groundhogs hibernate, their breathing slows from 260 to 14 breaths a minute. Their body temperature drops to 50 degrees.
- German settlers started the Groundhog Day tradition in the U.S. If a grounhog in Punxsutauney, Pennsylvania sees its shadow on February 2nd, winter is supposed to last another six weeks.
